About Mercer & Scope of Practice
What is an IBCLC?
IBCLC stands for Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. This is the highest level of professional certification in lactation care. It signifies that I have met rigorous education requirements, completed extensive clinical hours, and passed a comprehensive exam, ensuring you receive evidence-based and ethical care.
Are you still practicing as a midwife?
For our British Columbia clients - I am a Practicing Midwife in BC, in addition to being an IBCLC. This allows me to provide integrated care; however, please clarify when booking if you require specific midwifery services versus a focused lactation consultation.
How is an IBCLC different from a La Leche League Leader or a peer counsellor?
IBCLCs are highly trained healthcare professionals who specialize in complex feeding problems, clinical assessments, and medical history reviews. Peer counsellors and group leaders offer wonderful support, but only an IBCLC is certified to diagnose and create comprehensive clinical care plans for both parent and baby.

What are your working hours?
My dedicated consultation hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30 AM–2:30 PM. This scheduling allows me to provide focused, high-quality care during the day.
What should I prepare for a consultation?
For both in-home and virtual visits, please try to have your baby ready to feed near the start of the appointment. Also, gather any tools you frequently use (pump, supplemental nursing system, etc.) and have any questions or notes you want to review handy.
How long is a typical appointment?
In-home consultations in London, Ontario are typically 2 hours to allow for a full assessment, observation of feeding, and creation of a clear plan. Virtual consultations are generally 60–90 minutes.
